Trendy, classy and fashion-friendly marketing ideas and concepts are always welcome. Last week LAFORGE Optical started their Indiegogo campaign for Icis (pronounced eye-sis). Icis smart glasses are here to challenge Google Glass.
What is Icis all about?
Iciy by Laforge is a pair of eyewear that displays notifications from your smartphone. With the help of bluetooth you can sync both devices thus being able to use your phone hands-free.
Here’s the official product description right from the LAFORGE website:
“Icis™ is prescription eyewear that displays notifications from your smartphone. This includes real-time updates from your social networks and navigational applications, allowing you to interact with your smartphone without the hassle of having to pull it out of your pocket. Icis™ also features a camera, microphone, and speaker to complement the hardware in your phone. This customized prescription eyewear will come in a variety of styles and colors to fit your unique taste. Icis Bold™ will be our higher end product line that offers a higher resolution display than that of Icis™, as well as a finer degree of customization.”
And now it’s time to head over to the video and see this baby in action 🙂

Haute Couture Marketing Ideas: Icis vs. Google Glass
While some people think the frames are horrible (see comments on CNET News), others love the haute couture style and approach this startup adopted when designing the glasses.
So far, we have only one major competitor in this market, namely Google Glass. Competition has always been a good thing because it drives innovation and new ways of thinking.
What I like most about Icis is their targeting and positioning. Unlike Google Glass, Icis presents a variety of eye-wears because no two human faces are alike.
“The human face is so unique. No two are alike. Making one pair of eye-wear to fit everyone’s face is like trying to make one pair of shoes to fit everyone’s feet. It’s impossible. With Icis Bold we recognize that and we are creating a choice of styles, shapes and colors that complement your personality and character.” – Icis video ad
The second thing I like about Icis is the fact that you don’t have to look up and to the right (you currently need to do this with Google Glass) in order to get your information. With Icis you get your info displayed around the outside of the field of vision.

The startup has launched a campaign on Indiegogo. Laforge’s aim is to raise a total amount of $80,000.
So far, the current and former alumni of Rochester Institute of Technology have raised $35,171 and there are 25 days left. If you want to support the ambitious engineers at Laforge you can do so by visiting Indiegogo.
