Popeye’s marketing impact on the spinach industry is a well-known fact. Our cartoon hero continues to impress children worldwide by saving the day after drinking a tasty can of spinach. Popeye helps the one in need and is equally responsible for growing spinach sales.
If you love cartoons I’m sure you remember the crazy adventures Popeye would experience. He will most likely appear at the beginning of an episode as a helpless guy and change dramatically after drinking a can of spinach.
Popeye’s Marketing Impact on the Spinach Industry
Why is the link between this cartoon character and the spinach industry so interesting, and more importantly what can we learn from this marketing strategy?
Using Popeye as a role model in commercials for different brands and products has payed out. The character was heavily merchandized throughout the years. Everything from spinach to beverages (Dr. Pepper, Minute Maid) to games and toys was available with Popeye’s picture on it.
Using the popularity of a cartoon hero, movie star or music icon to promote products is a successful marketing method corporations and media giants still use.
There are two important rules the creators of Popeye followed. Scott Aughtmon mentions these lessons in his current write-up on Business 2 Community:
1. Create content that is of such great quality that it can stand on its own.Don’t be in a hurry to create any old content. Make sure your content is something people will want to consume and enjoy consuming.2. Don’t try to blatantly sell your product/service with your content.Include your product/service, but make sure your content is entertaining and helpful to the reader, not just helpful for your sales.
Again, it all comes down to a healthy mix of marketing and content. Wise marketers always invest time and resources into analyzing and understanding their target audience. Some people like to be entertained while others prefer a ‘stiffer’ approach.
